A strip of paper 5 inches wide is folded along a line. How small can the twice covered area be? Explain.

Solution

Width of paper = 5 inches

Let length = l inches

Area = length ×width

Area = l×5 = 5l inches2

Now consider it folded along width. Now considerable --

Width = 5/2 = 2.5

Length = l

Area = 2.5 × l = 2.5l

So area becomes half.
