Caffeine is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. Regular use of it causes physical addiction and dependence which is mild unlike the addiction drugs. If you are addicted much and stop taking it for a day, you feel headache, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, loss of concentration etc. Though little amount of caffeine (like 3 cups) on daily basis is not that lethal. But people consuming heavier doses will be likely to have osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, cancer etc. In women very high consumption of Caffeine caused high risk of miscarriage. Consuming Caffeine at very high amounts might cause dehydration. Some children these days are consuming more than adults did. They are found to be sensitive to caffeine developing anxiety. The children might not take caffeine through coffee or tea, but through the soft drinks which contains it. This also might causes obesity to the children.

How exactly does caffeine become addictive? Soon after we consume caffeine either though we drink or eat, it is absorbed through the small intestine and transported to the blood stream. It is soluble in water as well as lipids, so it dissolves in blood also penetrates through the cell membrane. Thus it passes through the blood- brain barrier and enters the brain. Caffeine is structurally similar to adenosine produced inside the brain. Hence the Caffeine molecules easily fit into the brain cell receptors, where adenosine binds and there by blocking them effectively. Adenosine produced lacks blocking to nerve cells causing fatigue and mental disturbances. When adenosine stimulants are blocked , stimulants of brain like dopamine causes adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline.
