How does the structure of an osteon contribute to the overall strength and health of bone?

Solution

Osteons are structures present in compact bones which are arranged parallel to the long axis and gives strength to the bone by removing stress and there by protecting bones from bending or fracture. Osteon consists of concentric bone layers called lamellae, which surround a the Haversian canal. The canal consists of blood vessels for osteocytes. Osteons are several millimetres long and about 0.2 millimetre in diameter. Only mature bones contain Harvesian canals. Immature woven bone and primary osteons (new bone)are destroyed by large cells called osteoclasts, which hollow out a channel through the bone, The space between osteons is occupied by interstitial lamellae, which are the remnants of osteons that were partially resorbed during the process of bone remodelling. Osteons are connected to each other by channels called Volkmann’s canals.is Thus , osteon provides strength to the bone. If osteons are destroyed then the bone will become fragile leadiung to fractures and other serious complications.
