5. A 10.0 kg mass is tied to a 15.0 kg mass, and the string is draped over a massless, frictionless pulley. Determine the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string.
5. A 10.0 kg mass is tied to a 15.0 kg mass, and the string is draped over a massless, frictionless pulley. Determine the acceleration of the masses and the tension in the string.

Solution

let the tension be T and the accelearation a is downward for 15Kg mass.So

for 15Kg mass mg-T=ma which gives

15g-T=15a.

for 10 kg mass

T-10g=10a

adding both

5g=25a

so a = 1.96 m/s^2

Substituning it is any one equation

T-10g=10*1.96 = 99.96 N
