Traffic Monitoring 1. Assume that the speed contour plots (distance vs. time) of a section of a motorway stretch in Auckland are as follows VIkm/h] 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 490 485 480 475 470 06:00 08:00 10:00 12:00 14:00 Figure I VIkm/h 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 465 470 475 485 490 12:00 10:00 t[HH:MM Figure 2 06:00 08:00 14:00

Solution

a) The process of participating in a traffic flow is heavily based on behavioural aspects associated with human driver.

In fig 1 the driving direction is in bottom up direction as the maximum flow is in that direction only while in fig 3 also it is the same as in fig 1 maximum speed of the vehicles are moving in 80km/hr and in the fig 3 it is 60km/hr and increasing upward while in the fig 2 the direction of the driving is in bottom down as the most of the speed of the vehicles are in between 20km/hr-60km/hr.

b) the most of the traffic is in peak hours only. at peak hours . in fig 2 the constant flow is seen at 8:00 throughout the distance. that shows the no. of vehicles are equal and flowing in same direction. while in the other contours the concentration is likely to be in maximum peak hours only around 8:00 to 10:00 and the lunch time aroun 14:00- 16:00.
