A tank of volume 2 m3 contains nitrogen at a pressure of 05

A tank of volume 2 m^3 contains nitrogen at a pressure of 0.5 MPa and a temperature of 200 K.

A) Determine the mass of nitrogen in the tank using the ideal gas model.

B) Determine the mass of nitrogen in the tank using the real gas model.

C) What would the answer in part (A) be if the conditions in the tank were 3 MPa and 125 K?

Solution

Given,

Volume=2m3    ,   P=0.5*10^6 N/m2   , T=200k

1] Consider as an Ideal gas model,

PV=nRT

where n=m/M    ......m=mass of substance and M=molar mass of substance(for Nitrogen M=14)

0.5*10^6*2=m*8.314*10^3*200/14

mass,m=8.419Kg

2] for Real gas mode,

PV=mRT...............for normal air R=287 J/kgk

0.5*10^6*2=m*287*200

m=17.42Kg

3]

here P=3*10^6, T=125k

3*10^6*2=8.314*10^m*125/14

m=80.87Kg
