Is biology becoming more interesting to you as you learn about the workings of the cell and how cells interact in an organism?
What scientific information have you learned in this course that surprises or horrifies you? Why? What concerns or questions do you have about the class?
Solution
Yes, Biology is becoming more and more interesting as I learn about the workings of cell and learn about the interaction of various specialized cells not only with each other but also it is fascinating to learn how various cell components interact within a cell. I think it is great how a cell using only a piece of information (DNA) can create so many biological molecules from it like the RNA and the protein. These processes are very complicated yet beautiful. The proteins of the cell can perform so many functions.
All the cell organelles have designated functions in a cell, some produce energy, others keep the cell clean, some produce proteins, and some just store the information. All the cell components interact with one another so as to keep the cell working as a functional unit. The different types of cells also give rise to various tissue systems which form organs that would do vital functions in an organism and increase the complexity of functioning of the organism.
The scientific information that truly surprises me is that we now can have acess to all the information stored inside us. The information is universal and we can produce the proteins needed in our body by inserting our gene into simpler organisms. It is however horrific at the same time as this could lead to someone making a weird type of organism that could cause imbalance in nature. Also some of the genetic modifications of the organisms could result in their death. The genetically modified foods are also sometimes not safe to consume and might cause additional changes or diseases in people. The future concerns I have are that there should be more lessons about how ethiclly safe it is to transform organisms or to make new type of organisms. What are the general ethical laws that surround the protocol and working of these kind of experiments.
