Please describe three general means by which organisms can gain new traits. My guess is that natural selection and mutation are a part of the three. I cannot figure out the other one if that is the case. Plese do describe in detail. Thank you so much.

Mutations in genes would leads for acquiring new traits and produce new or altered traits, resulting in heritable differences between organisms. Natural selection caused by transfer of genes between populations, as in migration, or between species, in horizontal gene transfer. Evolution occures when this chages become more common in population. Natural selection causes heritable traits for survival and reproduction which later become more common, and harmful traits to become more rare.

The other way to get new trait is genetic drift which produces random changes in the frequency of traits in a population which arises from the role chance plays in survival and reproduction.
