Name two things that you could measure and analyse their relationship using the Pearson correlation. Mention the scale of each variable and state the anticipated direction of the relationship.
Solution
Example 1 :
Relationship between undergraduate grade point average and starting salary. In this case, both grade point average and starting salary are ratio level variables. Now, neither Chi-square nor ANOVA would be appropriate; instead, we would look at the relationship between these two variables using the Pearson correlation coefficient.
x = GPA
y = Starting salary
We\'d expect a person with higher GPA to have a better job and thereby a better starting salary.
Although, this is not a perfectly linear direct relation, we\'d still expect the direction to be POSITIVE
Example 2 :
Relationship between the amount of time spent in video games and the GPA of the student.
A person who spends more of his/her time on video games will obviously have lesser time to hit the books and therefore, will likely have a lower GPA
x = hrs spent playing video games
y = GPA
So, we\'d expect a NEGATIVE direction here because this is an example of linear inverse relation.
Although this has negative corelation, it is not perfectly negative.
