Jenny is taking courses both in mathematics and English. She estimates her probability of passing mathematics at 40% and English at 60%, and she knows that her mathematics and English skills are independent each other. What if her probability of passing both courses? What is her probability of passing at least one of them?
Solution
Let M denotes the passing mathematisc
Let E denotes the passing of English
Given P(M)=0.40
P(E)=0.60
Compute the probability of passing both courses
P(M and E) = P(M)*P(E)
= (0.40)*(0.60)
= 0.24
Compute probability of passing at least one of them
P(M or E) = P(M)+P(E)-P(M)*P(E)
= 0.40+0.60-(0.04)*( 0.60)
= 1-0.24
= 0.76
