In the figure below, a butterfly net is in a uniform electric field of magnitude E = 5.0 mN/C. The rim, a circle of radius a = 12 cm, is aligned perpendicular to the field. The net contains no net charge. Find the electric flux through the netting.
_____ N·m2/C
I keep getting an answer of 2.26e-4 and webassign says it is incorrect. Help is much appreciated and good feedback for the right answer.
Solution
because looking at the left side the A points to the left and the E points to the right. So, the angle between the two is 180 degrees
The flux through the netting is the same, by Gauss\'law (since there is no net charge),as the flux through the rim. The
fl ux is therefore
phi= E A cos 180 =5*10-3 *3.14* 144*10-4 = (-) 2.26*10-4 N/Cm2
