Lets first list out the main raw materials required to produce pig iron.

Iron ore is the main raw material which is converted into pig iron by smelting it in the blast furnace.

So In the beginning the Coke is burnt to produce carbon monoxide which further acts with the iron ore to form Iron ore and carbon dioxide.

So once you get the iron ore if the Limestone is not added then iron will be converted to iron silicate which is not desirable. SO the flux is added to get iron adn calcium silicate as slag which is removed which gives us the pig iron.
