Compare and contrast bottomup and topdown approaches to crea
Compare and contrast bottom-up and top-down approaches to creating an ecological society, examining the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Solution
Bottom up control proposes a unidirectional influence from lower to higher trophic levels, in which nutrients and other abiotic factors are the main determinants of community structure, including the abundance of primary producers. The nutrients supply control the biomass of primary producers, which in turn controls herbivores biomass & predator biomass. If nutrients supply is increased then whole system will respond to increased biomass.every trophic level will be boosted. disadvantage of the system is sometimes in aquatic system can adopt a inverted biomass pyramid for a short time.
the Top down control postulates that the control of each trophic level comes from the trophic level above. It is mainly predation that controls the accumulation of biomass at lower trophic level because predator limits herbivores which in turn increase primary producers. Disadvantage of this method is that we have to find out ideal predator for the herbivore.
