A behavioral health research team is interested in the relationship between depression and BMI (kg/m2) in their population of participants in an observational study. Suppose they gather information about a sample of their participants and assess the relationship between their outcome and predictor variable controlling for income status dichotomized as above and below the federal poverty line. The following are two computerized outputs from their model.

A) What are the independent and dependent variables?
B) What happened to the relationship between depression and BMI when the researchers included the dichotomous poverty variable?
C) Write out the model in symbols. Round to 3 decimal places.
D) Is there a significant association between poverty and depression?

Solution
a) Depression is the dependent variable and BMI an dpoverty are the independent variables..
b) the value of y-intercept has increased while the coffiecient of bmi has decreased when reaserchers included poverty. negative relation between them has been found ,i.e, with the increase of one, other value shall decrease!
c) Depression = 0.217 + 0.005*(BMI) - 0.186*( poverty)
d) the p-value of depresiion is less than the significance level. So, there is a significant statistical association!
