what are pycnoclines, haloclines, and thermoclines? describe how the thermoclines look in tropical, temperate, and polar oceans. would you expect the water column to be more stable in polar, tropical or temperate oceans? why?
Solution
Answer:-
Pycnoclines:-The boundary that seperates the two liquid layers having different densities. If the density gradient is due to temperature it is called thermoclines and if this density gradient is due to salt it is called haloclines. Pycnoclines are absent in polar regions. Formation of Pycnoclines is due to change temperature and salinity. Pycnoclines zone is extremely stable. Thermocline is semi-permanent in tropics and variable in temperate regions and absent or shallow in polar regions.
