An electron is acted upon by a force of 6.50×1015 N due to an electric field. Find the acceleration this force produces in each case:

Part A

The electron\'s speed is 9.00 km/s

a =_____________________ m/s2

Part B

The electron\'s speed is 2.40×108 m/s

and the force is parallel to the velocity.

a =_____________________ m/s2

Solution

F = 6 *10^-15 N

a) for speed = 3 km/s

as the speed is very smaller than the speed of light ,

mass will be same as rest mass

Using second law of motion

a = F/mass

a = 6.50 *10^-15/(9.11 *10^-31)

a = 7.135 *10^15 m/s^2

the accelation of electron is 7.135 *10^15 m/s^2

b)

for speed , v = 2.4*10^8 m/s

mass of electron , m = m0/sqrt(1 - (v/c)^2)

m = 9.11 *10^-31/sqrt( 1 - (2.4 *10^8/(3 *10^8))^2)

m = 1.5183 *10^-30 Kg

NOw , accleration = 6 *10^-15/( 1.5183 *10^-30)

accleration = 3.951 *10^15 m/s^2
