Determine the tensile stress in each segment of the bar shown. Segment AB has a square cross section 2 in. by 2 in. Segment BC has a circular cross section with a diameter of 1.75 in. The tensile load P = 75 kips.

Solution

The cross sectional areas of the bars AB and BC are 2x2 = 4 sq. inches and ( 1.75/2)² = 3.14(0.875)² = 2.40 sq. inches respectively. Let the tensile stress in the segments AB and BC of the bar be ₁ and ₂ respectively. Then

₁ = 75/4 = 18.75 kips/sq. inch

and ₂ = 75/ 2.40 = 31.25 kips/sq. inch
