The submerged end of the tube is 0.50 m below the water surface, and the water in the tube rises to a level that is 40 mm above the water surface in the river.  Estimate the velocity in the river upstream of the submerged end of the tube.

Velocity can be found by Bernoulli Equation
and mathematically,
V = (2gh)1/2
H = distance above the surface = 40 mm = 0.04 m
=> V = (2*9.81.0.04)1/2 = 0.886 m/s ..... ANSWER...
