A Pitot tube is placed in a river as shown in the figure below. The submerged end of the tube is 0.50 m below the water surface, and the water in the tube rises to a level that is 40 mm above the water surface in the river. Estimate the velocity in the river upstream of the submerged end of the tube.

Solution

In a Tube,

Velocity can be found by Bernoulli Equation

and mathematically,

V = (2gh)1/2

H = distance above the surface = 40 mm = 0.04 m

=> V = (2*9.81.0.04)1/2 = 0.886 m/s ..... ANSWER...
