Draw the schematic representation of a Micelle and a Bilayer

Draw the schematic representation of a Micelle and a Bilayer and what is their biological significance?

Solution

Micelles and Bilayers are formed by the lipids specially di acyl glycerols. Glycerol and Fatty acids upon esterified and form Tri Acyl glycerides or lipids. If tri acyl glycerides loose one fatty acid chain then they are called di acyl glycerols. When these di acyl glycerols mixed with water, all these di acyl glycerols collectively form bi layers due to hydrophobic interactions. These bi layers most commonly used for osmosis studies. Some times di acyl glycerides also forms liposomes \" a circular bi layer structurs extensively used as gene delivery vehicals\"

If tri acyl glycerides loose two fatty acid chain then they are called mono acyl glycerols or Lyso phospholipids. These compounds when mixed with water, they form single layer structurs called Micelles. Micellies contai a hydrophobic end one side and hydrophylic side in another side. Micelles principle is extensively used in soaps preparation. Soap mode of action is formation of micelle and remove oil scares or stains
