In your own words describe the following: What are the forces acting on an airfoil in a wind turbine application? What is the maximum Power coefficient in a turbine with airfoil? Physically why is there a limit on power production? From an aerodynamic point of view how can we increase the power in a wind turbine with airfoils?
Solution
Forces acting on wind turbine are basically
1. Lift force
2. Drag force
These both forces are perpendicular to each other. Lift forcr is normal force acting upward on turbine blade while drag force act in parallel direction.
Maximum power ccoefficient in turbine have limitation due to geometry size of turbine. Due to geometry of turbine maximum power has limit upto 60 %.
In wind turbine due to use of principle of airofoil friction due to regular shape is reduced. In airofoil section wake formation is minimum due to its geometric shape. Friction losses are reduced due to use of aerodynamic shape odf airofoil and ultimatly power in turbine increases.
