Explain a discontinuous output current in a regulator. Is it a normal behavior for a charger? Please explain each briefely in 3 or 4 sentences. Thank you,
Solution
Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), where primary current falls to zero before the end of the switching cycle. Even converters designed for continuous mode operation at full load will become discontinuous as the load current is decreased. In low inductive value applications also we are getting DCM operation in regulators. In applications where the maximum load current is fairly low, it can be advantageous to design for discontinuous mode operation. So it is a normal behavior for a charger. Here also current reaches zero before the end of the cycle.
