There is a drug order for antibiotic amikacin 7.5 mg/Kg administered intravenously for a patient weighing 110 pounds. Amikacin is available as 100 mg per 2mL vial. How many mg of drug is required to fill the order and what is the volume of the drug given. How many vials of drug would be required to accomplish dose?   mg =__ mL=__ vials =__

Solution

1 pound = .454 kg

So, 110 pound ~ 49.9 kg

7.5 mg per Kg of body weight

So, 49.9*7.5 =374.25 mg of antibiotic

Drug is available as 100 mg per 2ml

So, Volume of drug required is: 3.74*2=6.78~6.8 mL

So approximaltely 3.5 vials but we need to round it off to an integer so 4 vials.
