This theory of Adult development helps us to understand how society function.

George Valliant : George Eman Valliant is an American psychiatrist and curator of the Harvard study of Adult development. He born on 1934 in US. He mostly concentrated on aging of the people. He done his research on Adult development.His work mostly based on the Erikson\'s research on Adult developmental stages. He done his research on over 800 men and women who are nearly 60 years old.

INTRODUCTION : Adult development is the discipline of psychology and sociology.This theory helps us to understand the developmental and functional stages of society.many researchers like Daniel Levinson, Bernice Neugarten also worked on Adult development stages.. But out of all these studies Vaillant\'s studies gave a clear image of Adult development for future researchers.

George Vaillant\'s Adult Tasks Theory : Vaillant identifies 6 adult tasks that influences a person to mature as an adult.

They are....

                             1.Developing an Identity.

                              2.development of Intimacy.

                              3.Career Consolidation.

                              4.Generativity.

                              5. Keeping of the meaning.

                              6.Integrity.       

The frame of references is fundamentally Erikson\'s.. which he added 2 stages ,,,they are career consolidation and keeping of the meaning.      

1. Developing an identity: This stage of his theory involves the personal identity of a person. This includes when adolescent becomes separate from their parents and developing their own. they try to be an independent at all the levels like psychologically and financially.

2.Development of Intimacy : This is a crucial task in adult development. This involves learning to live or move with another person. in this task the person will get ability to maintain intimacy with another person in their life. e.g : loving another person, marriage.etc.

3. Career consolidation : This is a important and added variable of Vaillant\'s adult development theory. in this task the person trying for his expansion of personal identity in the society, by choosing a good and suitable profession..in order to career involves contentment, compensation,competence and commitment.This task mostly concentrated on the ability to work with the commitment. e.g work as wife, work as mother,work as father, self employment, work as assistant,etc. in this a young adult establish their own career. they are trying to be master in their profession and to get reputation in society.

4.Generativity:In this task the adult be as guide to the next generation. At this stage they hav developed sense of self.and also leadership qualities are seen. they acts like a leader, mentor,guide for the next generation or younger people.

5. Keeping of Meaning: In this task adult become judge good and bad. and acts like a wise judge.This is also another variable of Vaillant\'s adult theory.during this stage they mainly focus on the next generation. This is needs to pass on culture and tradition to the next generation.

6.Integrity: In this stage man become very spiritual.They give their life experiences and morals to the next generation for building their life. at this stage the shows forgiveness.gratitude, and defense mechanism.      

These are the 6 variables of Vaillant\'s Adult Theory.
