How many ATP can be produced by the complete oxidation of ea

How many ATP can be produced by the complete oxidation of each propionyl-CoA product of fatty acid oxidation? Compare this to the ATP yield for each acetyl-CoA.

Solution

when the oxidation of fatty acids containing odd chain , it comes in to the picture that the last round of the Beta-oxidation of odd chain fatty acids, one Propionyl CoA and one Acetyl CoA are produced, then Propionyl CoA converts in to Succinyl CoA.

It means Propionyl CoA must undergo a carboxylation which requires Biotin and Vitamin B12 for this reaction and subsequently these reactions produce Succinyl CoA.

There is anapleoretic fate of Succinyl CoA and the molecule of Succinyl CoA goes in the Krebs Cycle (citric acid cycle) which generate Oxalacetate.

It means it produces 1 GTP+1FADH2+1NADH=(1+2+3)=6ATP

And each Acetyl CoA yields 12 ATP when getting oxidized in the citric acid cycle.

How many ATP can be produced by the complete oxidation of each propionyl-CoA product of fatty acid oxidation? Compare this to the ATP yield for each acetyl-CoA.
