An electric heat pump that operates on a Carnot cycle is used to cool a house interior to 20 C on a day when the outside temperature is 33 C .
Part A
For every 1.0 J of electrical energy used, what quantity of thermal energy is removed from the house?
Solution
COP = temperature of hot source / temperature of hot source - temp of cold source=Th /Th -Tc = 33 /(33 - 20) = 2.538
again cop = heat energy expelled / electrical energy used
therefore heat energy absorbed = 2.538 J - 1 J = 1.538 J
