HIE gives a database of patient data to the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc. so that they can get a better idea of how to improve their services , better quality and reduce cost. In Florida, there are three prominent HIEs:

Patient Look-Up (PLU)- Connects the providers to exchange information statewide, Event Notification Service (ENS)- Provides real-time updation of when a patient has been admitted into a hospital, and Direct Messaging is HIPAA-compliant email service allowing participants to send and receive messages and attachments containing a patient’s clinical data.The HIE also makes sure that the patients get E-presciption.

A major advantage of providing this information is that patients can get better care by making their previous records available, and re-testing is not required. The HIE in Florida has 9000 beds, which makes it 20% of the total beds in the state. It comprises of 6 public and 12 private stakeholders.
