10.5 What other hormones are related to how calcium is utilized in the body. Tie this to a particular condition you know related to calcium management.
(More brain teaser than long answer- 3-4 sentences would do, once you make the connections)
Solution
In our blood, the calcium level is maintained by parathyroid hormone and Calcitonin and maintaining correct level of blood calcium concentration is very important as it is involved in nerve impulse and muscle contractions. We will have 99% of total body calcium in bones and teeth as calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca10[PO4]6[OH]2)
When calcium level is low: If the calcium level is low in blood, parathyroid gland will release the parathyroid hormone, which break down the bone and releases the calcium into the blood stream and also this parathyroid hormone will increase the calcium reabsorption by the kidneys, so that less amount of calcium will be excreted in the urine. In addition to this parathyroid hormone also increases the secretion of calcitriol so that our intestines can absorb more calcium from the food what we have taken.
When calcium concentration is high in blood: In this situation, thyroid will produce calcitonin, which goes and inhibits the osteoclasts and stimulates the osteoblasts, so that kidneys can excrete more calcium into the urine.
