If the tidal volume changed due to exercise, can this be accounted for by change in the 1RV, ERV, or a combination of both? Explain.
Solution
Tidal volume representing the volume of lung, that displace air during normal inhalation and exhalation without any external force. In healthy humans its volume is 500 ml for inspiration.
IRV or Inspiration Reserve Volume is the additional amount of air that can be inhaled after normal inhalation. In healthy individuals its volume is 3,100ml.
ERV or Expiration Reserve Volume is the additional air that can be forcebilly exhaled after the experation of normal tidal volume. This volume in normal individuals is 1200 ml
During excercise, there is demand for more oxygen, for that there is need to inhale more Air. This leads to increase the IRV and decrease the ERV. So increased Tidal Volume significantly affect the IRV & ERV
