I\'m stuck on the following homework problem:
Using the universal biological reaction as a template, determine the reaction of 1 mole of each of the following substrates: Glucose and Palmitate (palmitic acid) Balance the reaction (stoichiometry). Determine the moles of ATP produced, and the amount of energy available (in kcals or kJ). - You’ll have two separate reactions, one for the oxidation of glucose, and one for the oxidation of palmitate, with quantities of ATP and kcals for each of these fuel substrates
This is the Universal Biological Reaction we\'ve been using: O2+Food (would be glucose or Palmitate) --->H20+CO2+Heat
Solution
Palmitic acyl CoA (16C) + 7 CoA + 7O2 + 28Pi + 28ADP+ 8 acetyl-CoA + 28ATPs + 7H2O
Since one acetyl CoA gives 10 ATP upon entering the Kreb cycle, the 8 acetyl CoA would give 80 ATPs. This gives total 28+80= 108ATPs per fatty acid (16C).
Since 1 ATP= 7.5 Kcal
So 108 ATPs= 810 kcal
Oxidation of glucose
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + 38 ATP
Since 1 ATP= 7.5 Kcal
So 38 ATPs= 285 kcal
