Describe how the endocrine system is different from the nervous system the other control system of the body.

Solution

Human body responds to a wide variety of both external and internal stimuli. However the internal environment is balanced by a mechanism called homestasis and the body also adapts itself to the external stimulus .The endocrine and the nervous system help the body to adapt itself towards this stimulus.The mechanism of action is different in both the systems and when compared to the endocrine system the response of nervous system is far more quicker than the endocrine system as it involves the transmission of signals from the nervous system .

Nervous system: Nervous system comprises of brain, spinal cord,sensory organs and it comprises of a network of neurons which form the building blocks of communication and carry the message from and to the brain from different parts of the body.The stimulus signals the generation of electrical impulses in the form of action potentials which are transmitted by the help of neuro transmmiters along the neurons to the target cells hence the response is quicker and at a faster rate and also short lived.

Endocrine system: endocrine system comprises of endocrine glands or the ductless glands like the pituatory ,thyroid , adrenal glands etc.They secrete chemical substances known as the hormones which are secreted into blood and other body fluids which means there site of secretion is different from there site of action and elicit cellular response once they reach the target cell.

As they are synthesized and transported to the site of action the response of endocrine system is delayed when compared to the nervous system but the effects of these hormones are long lasting and very little amount of hormone can bring about the response.

the endocrine system and the nervous sytsem however work in tandem and are connected by the hypothalamus region of the brain.
