Consider two unequal lumbers. If 2 times die smaller number is subtracted from 2 times die larger number, the difference is 12. The larger number is 5/2 of the smaller. Find the two numbers. They are not necessarily integer values.

Solution

consider two unequal numbers. of 2 times the smaller number is subtracted from the two times larger number, the difference is 12. the larger number is 5/2 of the smaller. find the two numbers

Given 2 times the smaller number is subtracted from the two times larger number. So, we can write it as 2L-2S and they also mentioned the difference is 12. so, 2L - 2S =12

2L - 2S =12 ----------> 1st equation

and now we have the larger number is 5/2 of the smaller. means L = 2.5 S           (Where 5/2 = 2.5)

L = 2.5 S

we have L = 2.5S in fist equation we have 2L so, L+L = 2.5S +2.5S----> 2L = 5S

2L = 5S

Now, we substitute 2L in first equation

2L-2S = 12

5S - 2S = 12

3S = 12

s = 4

We know S = 4, if we substitute s value in 2L = 5S then

2L = 5S

2L = 5*4

2L = 20

L = 10

Hence the two unequal numbers are 4 and 10

S = 4 , L = 10

The two numbers are 4 and 10
