Open-Response Homework Problem 18.2 A hockey puck (m = 0.03 kg) with velocity 20 m/s is caught by an 80-kg hockey player initially at rest. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ice and the hockey player is 0.01. How far does the hockey player slide after he catches the puck?

Solution

Applying momentum conservation to find the velocity after the collision,

initial momentum = after momentum of puck plus player system

0.03 x 20   + 80 x 0 = (80 + 0.03)v

v = 7.5 x 10^-3 m/s

friction force, f = uk N = uk mg

a = - f/m = - uk g = - 0.01 x 9.8 = - 0.098 m/s^2

Using vf^2 - vi^2 = 2ad

0^2 - (7.5 x 10^-3) = 2(-0.098)d

d = 2.87 x 10^-4 m
