The speed of DNA replication at the replication fork is abou
The speed of DNA replication at the replication fork is about 100 nucleotides per second in human cells. What is the minimum number of origins of replication that a human cellmust have for it to replicate its DNA once every 24 hours? Re: Human cells contain 2 copies of the human genome (1 from mom and one from dad) each copy contains 3 X10^9 nucleotide paris.
Solution
In this case the speed of the nucleotide replication is 100 per second and to attain the number of 3x10^9 nucleotide pairs the number of origin of replication required are :
In 1 sec 100 nucleotides replicate
In 1 hour = 100x 3600= 360000 nucleotides = 3.6 x 10^4
The required nucleotide sequence number is (3x 10^9)×2 for which this quantity requires at least (3.6x 10^4)2 origin of replication.
