Next, describe the difference between centralized and decentralized Web server architecture. If you were in charge of the e-commerce function at a small to medium sized organization, which type of architecture would recommend? Explain.

b) Research Web server hardware at Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Oracle. Provide a summary of what is offered by each manufacturer. Include information such as the operating system, the type of processor used, the ability to expand, price (if available), and any other relevant information. If you were in charge of the e-commerce function at a small to medium sized company, which one would you select? Explain.

c) Visit the Open Source Initiative. Describe what is meant by “open source,” and indicate the potential benefit of using software that is categorized in this manner. What are the standards for this type of software? Also, read the article on Microsoft’s open source plans. How does this approach affect the future of Web server software and software in general?

A> a web server is basically a system or a computer with higher hardware specifications, which host a website and serve its pages. When you type a url of a website and hit enter, following steps takes place:
1. the browser will resolves the domain name to an IP Address.
2. now the browser will request the full URL
3. web server will send the requested page
4. browser will display the page.

There are basically two types of request a client sends to the web server :
1. GET request : is used to retreive information from the server
2. POST request : is used to send data to the server

The difference between centralized & decentralized web server architecture is that in centralized architecture, all the components of the architecture resides at one place. And in case of decentralized architecture, all the components resides at different places. The unification of powers and authorities, in the hands of high-level management, is known as Centralization. Decentralization means dispersal of powers and authorities by the top level to the functional level management. Centralization is suited for small scale business application while decentralized is for large scale business.

If I am in charge of the e-commerce function at a small to medium sized organization, I will choose the centralized architecture as it will effieciently solve the purpose.
