The models in biology were used with the aim that certain organisms can be used models to gain knowledge of other organisms.

It started in 1900 century when drosophila was used as a model in research laboratory and it opened door for other organisms to be used as models in biological studies like mouse, E.coli etc.

Role in biological development:

1.Serve as a test subject in biomedical research.

2. Models used to screen drugs to treat diseases like Glaucoma.

3. Role in infectious diseases and in development of organ transplantation.

4.Role in eradication of polio virus using monkey as biological model.

5.Use of ovariectomized rat as a model to cure osteoporosis and using plasmodium model to treat malaria.

The main aim of a biologist to use model organism is to correct any errors and to get more accurate results.It helps them to search for the cause and treatment of a disease.

But due to some ethical issues nowadays models are being replaced by cell culture or in-vitro studies as they preserve the physiology of living cell.
