You wish to study how membrane composition affects fluidity

You wish to study how membrane composition affects fluidity using Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP). On the following graphs, a control FRAP curve has been drawn. Please draw how you predict the FRAP curve would change for each of the following experiments: You add an enzyme which saturates lipid hydrocarbon chains. You raise the temperature. You add a drug that prevents 25% of the lipids from diffusing You add an enzyme that makes lipid hydrocarbon chains 10 carbon atoms longer What are two ways in which the extracellular and cytoplasmic leaflets of the plasma membrane are different in composition from each other? What is one function that this asymmetry plays in the cell?

Solution

7) the main difference between the two cytoplasmic and extracellur leaflet of plasma membrane are cytoplasmic membrane have more new lipids and phospholipids whereas the extracellur leaflet have less new phospholipids...

The second difference lies between the composition of the both ie

Phosphodialserine and phosphodielinsitol are present more to the cytoplasmic leaflet whereas the sphingomylien are present on the extracellur leaflet more..!!!

B) assymtry plays an important role in the cell like lipids assymtry helps in the proper translocation of the lipids between outside and inside the cell. Moreover it also plays a role in cell cycle propagation, apoptosis, platelet coagulation...!!!
