A woman has agreed to participate in an ESP experiment. She\'s asked to pick, randomly two numbers between 1 and 6. The second number must be different from the first. Determine the probability that: a) the first number picked is 3 and the second number picked exceeds 4. b) both numbers picked are less than 3; greater than 3.
Solution
a) P(first number picked is 3 and the second number picked exceeds 4)= P(first number picked is 3)*P(second number picked exceeds 4 /first number picked is 3)
= (1/6)*(2/5)=2/30=1/15
b)P(both numbers picked are less than 3) =(2/6)*(1/5)=1/15
P(greater than 3) = (3/6)*(2/5)=6/30 =1/5
