Determine the normal force shear force and moment at point C
Determine the normal force, shear force, and moment at point C. Take that P_1 = 9 kN and P_2 = 14 Determine the normal force at point C. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Determine the shear force at point C. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Determine the normal force at point C. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Solution
a) The normal force is due to the difference of the shear force adjacent to the point C,
F normal at C = 14 - 9 = 5 kN (tensile)
b) To find the shear stress at point the reaction forces at joints needs to be calculated,
sigma Fv = 0
Ra + Rb = 14 + 9 = 23 ----- eqn1
Also sigma Ma = 0
Rb x 6 - 9 x 1.5 - 14 x 4.5 = 0
Rb = 12.75 kN
So, Ra = 23 - 12.75 = 10.25 kN
SF at C = Ra - P1 = 10.25 - 9 = 0.75 kN
c) Moment at C, Mc = 9 x 1.5 - Ra x 3 = 9 x 1.5 - 10.25 x 3 = 17.25 kN m (neg)
