The following is a screenshot of a design for a dashboard/controls. Describe how this image shows both good use of human factors principles, and how it does not. Please describe in terms of both display design, control, and any other human performance issues discussed in class. You may label the drawing or make a list. Please include at least 5 items.

Solution

Firstly I dont know what was discussed in your class: But using the general pronciples of Design incorporating HUMAN FACTOR PRINCIPLES: This is also known as ERGONOMICS

1. Location of Buttons, knobs etc--put them in easy reach - 4-8 inches recommended

2.controls not used when dreiving- put them outside user envelope.

3. put some controls outside the user reach eg gear lever which can be bumped accidentally

4 separate controls that can be actuated inadvertently at same time ( see MIL Std 1472D)

5 Shape, color coding, force feedback reqd in controls (cannot gage from your figure)

6 Spoken controls possible ( cannot gage from fgure)

Details in UMTRI-93-21

BAD: Gear shift lever can be bumped accidentally

Steering wheel to close to driver, air bag can hurt driver.

Too much emphasis on stereo controls

Odometers to be viewed through steering wheel cutouts--not good

Too many buttons on steering wheel, can be actuated accidentally during had movement .:if these not needed put them outside reach (envelope).
