1. What does it mean for a bacterium to be “antibiotic resistant”? In your opinion, what factors have led to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria?
Solution
A bacterium to be \"antibiotic resistant\" says that it is resistant to antibiotics. The antibiotics that were commonly used for their treatment are no longer working. In other words they have become resistant to antibiotics.
The factors leading to the development of antibiotic resistance are:
1. Repeated and improper uses of antibiotics.
2. Unnecessary prescription of antibiotics incase of viral infections against which they have null effect.
3. Too frequent prescription of broad spectrum antibiotics.
4. Inadequate use by patient which do not respect neither the duration of treatment nor dosage of medication.
