Describe how to make the following solution 1L of 5M MgCl2 H

Describe how to make the following solution.

1L of 5M MgCl2

How many grams of MgCl2 would you need to weigh out? How much water would you add?(Molar mass of MgCl2 = 95.2 g/mole)

Solution

Answer:

to calculate the molarity of a solution use the following formula

M = (x/ molecular mass) * (1000/ volume in mL)

since here M= 5M

molecular mass= 95.2 g/mole

volume = 1000 mL

x can be calculated now

5M = (x/ 95.2 g/mole) * (1000/1000)

x= 5 * 95.2 g

x= 476 grams

Therefore to make this Molar solution weigh 476 g of MgCl2 and dissolve it in the volume of water so that it makes a total volume of 1 L

Reember not to add all 1 L water as the salt too would have its own volume and the total volume will increase cahnging the molarity of the solution. Total volume after the salt has been dissolved should be 1 L.
