A computer hard drive contains a circular disk with diameter
A computer hard drive contains a circular disk with diameter 2.5 in and sling at a rate of 7200 revolutions per minute. Answer all the following steps to determine the linear speed of a point on the edge of the disk in inches per min.
Step 1: Write the three formulas you need to solve this problem
Step 2: Using one of the formulas from step 1, find the angle theta in radians through which the point on the edge of the disk rotates.
Step 3: Using one of the formulas from step 1 and your answer from step 2, find the distance s in inches traveled by the point on the edge.
Step 4: Using one of the formulas from step 1 and you answer from step 3, find the linear speed of the point on the edg of the disk in inches per min.

Solution
dia of disk = 2.5 inch
sling rate = 7200 rev/min
a) To determine the linear speed we would use the formula:
distance rotated in inches = radius *angle rotated
Angular speed = 2pi*sling rate
Linear speed = angular speed*radius of disk
radius of disk = diameter/2
b) angle rotates in 1 minute = (2pi*7200) = 45238.93 radians
c) distance rotated in inches = radius *angle rotated
= (2.5/2)*45238.93
= 56548.67 inches
d) linear speed = 7200*2pi*(2.5/2)
= 56548.67 inches/minute
