A hydraulic press has one piston of diameter 4 cm and the other piston of diameter I8 cm. What force must be applied to the smaller piston to obtain a force of 1, 224 N at the larger piston

Solution

Force of piston 1 divided by area of piston one = force of piston 2 divided by area of piston two
in other words the pressure is the same for both piston
area of 4 cm piston = pi r^2 = pi * 2^2 cm^2
area of 7.8 cm piston = pi r^2 = pi*3.9*3.9 cm^2

F / (pi*2*2) = 1224 / (pi*3.9*3.9)
F = 1224*4 / 3.9*3.9
F = 321.89 N
