A metal strip 536 cm long 107 cm wide and 0951 mm thick move

A metal strip 5.36 cm long, 1.07 cm wide, and 0.951 mm thick moves with constant velocity through a uniform magnetic field B = 1.51 mT directed perpendicular to the strip, as shown in the figure. A potential difference of 4.18 mu_V is measured between points x and y across the strip. Calculate the speed v.

Solution

F=qE

F=qvB

here v is the velocity

B is the magnetic field, E is the electric field

Bothe forces are equal. Hence equate above equations

qE=qvB

v=E/B

E= V/d = 4.18X10-6/1.07X10-2

E=3.90X10-4

V=3.90X10-4/1.51X10-3

V=0.26 m/s
