For each of the following questions, state whether or not you would expect the distribution of data to be approximately normal. (Assume all of the data comes from the US.) If you think it would not be normal, explain why not. If you do think it would be approximately normal, give a reasonable guess of the mean and standard deviation. Each question is worth 2 pts. 1. The number of miles driven last year by licensed drivers 2. The distance from home to work of people who choose walking as their primary commute mode 3. The distance from home to work of people who choose driving as their primary commute mode 4. The number of miles a car is driven before it is scrapped 5. Today\'s price of regular gasoline at gas stations
Solution
1. The number of miles driven last year by licensed drivers
No its not normal distribution . Since almost all licensed dirvers will drive almost same miles in a year.
2. The distance from home to work of people who choose walking as their primary commute mode
It is normal distribution data . Since few people office will be far from the office and few of them may be residing very near to office ....
Mean Distance from office to home can be 25 km with standard deviation of 5 km (Guess)
3. The distance from home to work of people who choose driving as their primary commute mode.
Distance will be almost same for such people therefore it is not normal distribution.
4. The number of miles a car is driven before it is scrapped
Data is not Normally distributed . Since Almost all cars will travel almost equal distance before being it scrapped... hence this set of data must be almost uniformly distributed.
5. Today\'s price of regular gasoline at gas stations
Data is not Normally distributed . It is Uniform distribution since price of gasolene will be fixed irrespective of gas station.
