Besides asexual reproduction in the life cycle of Peziza sexual reproduction eventually takes places and one among the very complex system in fungal reproduction. Different mating strains are formed say positive (+ve) and negative (-ve) strains and spores are developed for mating due in course of season. The protoplast of male antheridium and female ascogonium fuses by plasmogamy. Meosis cell division forms haploid nuclei or dicaryon forming ascogenous hyphae +ve or -ve hyphae. Ascus is formed at tip of the hyphae of the ascogonium forming a hook like crozier. Four daughter haploid is formed after mitosis. Ascospores germinate and the dicaryotic mycelium is formed. Two septa form a dikaryon undergoes karyogamy forming diploid zygote (only diploid form in lifecycle of fungus) which revert back to haploid form by undergoing subsequent meiosis followed by mitosis resulting 8 nuclei. 8 nuclei divides cytoplasm to form individual haploid ascospore which is later germinated and developed to form individual mycelia.
