CONDUCTING HEMOGLOBIN ELECTROPHORESIS TESTING: DIAGNOSING SICKLE CELL ANEMIA

1. PROTEIN QUESTION: The term \"isoform\" is a somewhat ambiguous term. In no more than 2-3 sentences, give the reason these proteins are considered isoform Must back up your statement with valid literature citation (in your own words please).

2. TECHNIQUE/METHODOLOGY QUESTION: Identify two possible technicl aspects in the procedure that could lead to variations observed in the results obtained from different lab groups. Explain how could you correct or reduce error brought on by each of these technical variations.

Solution

1.Protein isoforms, or \"protein variants\" are either several different forms of protein coded from the same gene, or proteins with amino acid sequence and functional similarities, when they are products of different genes. Five types of genes are responsible for different kinds of haemoglobin. These are HbA: HbS: Hba: Hbb: and Hbs: Sickle cell persons have hemoglobin molecules which consist of 2 alpha and 2 s chains. Therefore these different forms of haemoglobin proteins are considered as isoforms.

2.The following care should be taken to minimize the error in different lab groups.
