25 A short square timber post supports a load of 115 kips 51
25. A short square timber post supports a load of 115 kips 511.5 kN]. If the allowable compressive stress is 1000 psi [6895 kPa], what nominal-size square timber should be used?(See Table A.8.)
Solution
Given Load, P = 115 Kips
Allowable compressive stress = 1000 psi = 1 ksi
Therefore Area of the cross section of the timber section = Load/ Allowable stress = 115/1 = 115 sq.inch
So, look at the table A.8 with you and choose a section with dimension equal or greater than 10.723 inches*10.723 inches.
