Name the two hormones commonly referred to as thyroid hormon
Solution
Answer 1:
Triiodothyronine (T3) and its prohormone, thyroxine (T4), tyrosine-based hormones produced by the thyroid gland are primarily REFERRED AS thyroid hormones.
Action/functions:
Increases basal metabolic rate of almost all cells.
Essential for bone growth and maturation, also needed for nervous tissue and brain maturation
Works along with Insulin and help in glycogenolysis and glucose metabolism.
Play important role in protein metabolism and lipid metabolism. Metabolism of fat soluble vitamin, for example in the synthesis of vitamin A and its conversion.
Answer 2:
Due to an overactive thyroid, more thyroid hormone is produced which results in an increase in metabolic rate (as these hormones increase the basal metabolic rate along with stimulating protein and lipid metabolism). This results in the increase in temperature leading to more sweat production than usual. Due to increase in metabolic rate, there is more demand for oxygen which causes an increase in heart rate. This can also lead to weight loss if the usual calorie intake of the patient is not balanced with the increased metabolic rate.
