List the ways in which fatty acid oxidation and fatty acid synthesis differ (suggestions: What are the e- carriers? Activating groups? Substrates and by-products? Cellular location?)

Solution

Difference between fatty acid synthesis (FAS) and fatty acid oxidation (FAO)

1. FAS occur in cytosol whereas FAO occur in mitochondria.

2. FAS is a process where activated acyl group linked to malonyl units to form chain of polycarbon whereas in FAO there is a breakdown of Activated acyl group more firmly acetyl CoA.

3. In FAS NADPH is electron donar and in FAO FAD is electron acceptor.

4. Precursor of FAS is Acetyl CoA and final product is fatty acid whereas FAO produced Acetyl CoA by breakdown of fatty acid.

5. Main enzyme involved in FAS is fatty acid syntheses whereas in FAO dehydrogenase, hydrolase enzymes involved.
